Castro, Moeller advance legislation to provide equal access to township assistance

State Senator Cristina Castro advanced a measure, sponsored by State Representative Anna Moeller in the House, aimed at providing organizations with equal access to township assistance, regardless of the immigration status of the population they serve.

“Organizations serving the public provide critical services and programming to families, children and whole communities,” said Castro (D-Elgin). “The perceived immigration status of an organization’s participants should never be a reason to terminate the organization’s funding that they use to provide such vital services.”

House Bill 1283 amends the Township Code to prevent a township official from denying funding to an organization based upon the perceived citizenship or immigration status of the person who would receive those funds from the organization. The bill would codify existing federal and state protections already afforded to an organization into the Township Code.

More than $1.3 million in tourism funding coming to 22nd District thanks to Senator Castro

To foster economic growth and help municipalities, nonprofits and promotional groups revitalize Illinois’ tourism industry, attractions in District 22 will seemore than $1.3 million in grants thanks to the support of State Senator Cristina Castro.

Through the Tourism Attractions and Festivals Grant program, Elgin, Dundee Township, Schaumburg and Hoffman Estateswill see grants to support a broad range of tourism-related projects that drive economic activity, including live performance venues, attractions, museums and outdoor festivals.

“Funding the highlights of our communities helps ensure that visitors, families and businesses will benefit from this investment," said Castro (D-Elgin). “From festivals and zoos to lakefront attractions and event venues, Illinois’ small businesses and attractions can breathe a little easier knowing this financial assistance will support them in drawing visitors to all corners of our state.”

Castro helps secure more than $5 million for transportation improvements in Schaumburg and Streamwood

ELGIN – To expand travel options, support alternate modes of transportation and enhance quality of life, State Senator Cristina Castro announced that Schaumburg and Streamwood will be receiving more than $5 million in funding for transportation and infrastructure improvements.

Through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, Schaumburg and Streamwood will see grants to support projects that include biking and walking paths, trails and streetscape beautification to encourage safe travel across various modes of transportation.

“The Rebuild Illinois program continues to deliver for our communities through historic investments in roads and bridges, transit and rail systems, waterways, bicycle and pedestrian accommodations and more,” said Castro (D-Elgin). “I look forward to seeing the impact of these projects as they bring Illinois to the forefront of infrastructure investment and transportation safety.”

Senate approves Castro measure requiring colleges and universities to accept all major transfer courses for major credit, saving students time and money

SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Cristina Castro’s legislation to ensure completed major courses are approved and accepted for full major credit at all Illinois public colleges and universities has passed the Senate.

“Students who earn major coursework credit at a community college should not have to spend more precious time and money to re-earn the same credit at a four-year university,” said Castro (D-Elgin). “This legislation will reduce the burden on our students and accelerate the time it takes them to earn a degree and start a meaningful career.”

Senate Bill 2288 expands upon the Illinois Articulation Initiative Act by requiring public colleges and universities to accept all major courses approved for transfer through IAI as equivalent major courses, as long as the specific major is offered at the receiving institution.
