castro hhm twELGIN – In recognition of her outstanding commitment to fighting for Latino communities, State Senator Cristina Castro (D-Elgin) was presented with the Outstanding Commitment as an Elected Official by Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs.

“It is important that we celebrate those who have paved the way before us, but we must also highlight leaders like Senator Cristina Castro who work diligently to push for diversity, protect consumers, and fight for working families in Illinois,” Frerichs said.

“As one of a small handful of Latinas serving in the General Assembly, I’ve always made it a top priority to stand up for Latino communities,” Castro said. “During Hispanic Heritage month, it’s important to remember not only where we came from, but where we are going as well.”

The award is part of a series given out by the treasurer as part of his office’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage month. The awards are meant to celebrate the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans and their contribution toward making our world a better place to work, live and raise a family. Castro was recognized for her years of legislative effort to provide support to Latino communities, including the Immigrant Tenant Protection Act.

“I’m humbled and honored to receive this award from Treasurer Frerichs, and I want to thank him for making the effort to recognize me and other Latino leaders throughout the state during this important month,” Castro said.

A full list of award recipients can be found on the treasurer’s website.
