SPRINGFIELD – To bring more tax dollars to Kane County, State Senator Cristina Castro (D- Elgin) has introduced a measure to create a new submission window for a county to submit cannabis sales tax paperwork.
“One of the major appeals of legalizing cannabis in Illinois was the amount of tax dollars it could bring to our local governments,” Castro said. “This measure would provide an additional window of opportunity for county governments to receive the taxes from cannabis sales.”
Currently, counties must submit their paperwork by April 1 to begin collecting tax dollars for cannabis sales on July 1 or submit paperwork by Oct. 1 to begin collecting tax dollars on Jan. 1 of the next year.
This measure would create a one-time submission deadline of Nov. 1, 2020 for counties to begin collecting tax on cannabis sales in May of 2021. Under this new window, Kane County would be allowed to begin collecting sales tax on cannabis in May of 2021.
House Bill 2415 passed the Senate Executive Committee on Wednesday.
